Hailing from the Caribbean twin island of Trinidad & Tobago, Walter L. Gilbert was the last child of Walton Cyril and Joan Catherine Gilbert (nee Raeburn).
Born on December 6, 1955, Walter attended San Juan Elementary School then Emmanuel High School, San Juan from which he graduated before emigrating to Brooklyn, New York in November 1973. He initially worked at the Triborough Bridge Authority before moving to the manufacturing sector of Kings County Hospital Center in Brooklyn where he was a print operator for 27 years before retiring.
An avid sports fan and outdoors’ man, Walter loved the traditional Caribbean sports such as cricket and football “aka soccer,” the New York Knicks, spending time on the beach, and fishing on his days off. Upon his retirement, he decided to relocate back to Trinidad & Tobago in 2011. He prided himself on retiring at a relatively young age to “go fishing” and to watch his favorite soccer team, Manchester United, while indulging in his favorite beverage - Stag.
Always relatively quiet and laid back, Walter loved to have a good time, go on “Bus Rides” to other cities and videotape Carnival activities. In his earlier years, Walter enjoyed Deejaying at Caribbean house parties along with his cousin, George (“Georgie”). He frequently returned to the US on vacation, and ultimately to seek medical attention. Sadly, after fighting the good fight, Walter succumbed to his ailment on October 26, 2022.
Walter is preceded in death by both of his parents – Walton and Joan Gilbert, two older brothers – Ned and Roy, and various other family members. Walter is survived by his brothers, Wayne and Aaron; sisters, Linda, Cynthia and Ann; his partner of 37 years, Bernett; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and close friends.
