Marie L. Johnson

Marie Louise Johnson was born in Plymouth Florida to Theodore Roosevelt Johnson and Louise Gary on July 23, 1931.  She graduated from Hungerford High School in Eatonville, Florida, and shortly after graduating, she started a family and moved to New York City in 1961. Marie attended the Dorothy Cain School and graduated with a certificate in keypunch in 1968. She began working for Abraham and Strauss stores in 1974 and retired in 1993.

Marie Johnson joined the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights in 1987. She joined the Floral Club in 1988 where she was appointed as a secretary of the Floral Club and was responsible for keeping track of all the club’s financial records. She thoroughly enjoyed participating in all the club activities such as visiting other churches or organizations, going on trips, and participating in fundraisers. The Floral Club became a special part of her life, and she was a dedicated member.

Marie Johnson was a pillar in the community and a long-standing member of her Montgomery Street Block Association. She lived at 334 Montgomery St. for over 50 years. Marie was feisty and funny, she loved music, dancing, block parties celebrating with her neighbors and friends, but most of all spending time with her family.  Marie Johnson would help anyone in need and opened her heart and home to all. Marie stood strong in her convictions, and she was loving, loyal, and committed to her children and grandchildren. She loved the Lord and was always moved by the Word, a soulful hymn, and encouraging prayer. Marie enjoyed going to church, and First Baptist was her extended family.  She was always dressed to impress for worship and loved to top off her outfit with a beautiful hat.

Marie Johnson transitioned on October 22, 2022, after enjoying a long, beautiful life and a courageous battle with cancer.

Marie is preceded in death, by her loving son Kenneth Johnson, and beloved grandson Corey Burce. 

Marie Johnson is survived by her adoring companion Nathaniel Bridges.

Marie Johnson’s Siblings: Velma Patton, Mary Torrance, Martha Bowers, and Leonard Johnson.

Marie Johnson’s Grandchildren: Eugene Burce, Lisa Davis, Tawana McKinney, Trina Ballantyne, Sharonda Manuel, Janine Wright, Allan D. Frederick, and Michael Johnson Jr.

Marie Johnson’s Great Grandchildren: Candace Davis, Brandy Davis, Alana Vaughn, Ryan Burce, Genia Burce, DeAundre Manuel, Christian Ballantyne, Devon Love, Evan Ballantyne, and Justin Burce.

Marie Johnson’s Great Great Grandchildren: Taylor Davis, Tyler Davis, and Sariah Manuel.
