JEANNE BOURSIQUOT DORANCY - OBITUARY
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jeanne Boursiquot Dorancy on August 3, 2024.
Jeanne B. Dorancy was born in La Vallée-de-Jacmel to Ferdinand Boursiquot and Eunelie François on August 15, 1941. She emigrated from Haiti to the United States in 1971 with her then-husband, Grand-Pierre Dorancy. She was an exemplary mother, grandmother, and human being. She embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit, fierce advocacy, and an unending generosity that could be seen in her love and care for her family and countless others.
Although she had previously earned a bachelor's degree in Haiti, Jeanne attended Brooklyn College, graduating summa cum laude with her bachelor's degree in education again while raising her six children which was no small feat. She continued her education at Brooklyn College earning two master's degrees in Special Education and Multicultural Education.
While studying for her degrees at Brooklyn College, Jeanne started her career as a Special Education Teacher at the Brookdale Hospital Center for People with Developmental Disabilities kickstarting a 40-year career in special education. She left her position at Brookdale Hospital to work for the League School in Brooklyn, NY. She joined the New York City Public School system as a teacher after securing her Special Education Permanent License. She stayed with the New York City public schools for 15 years, devoting herself to teaching hundreds of students with developmental challenges and where she made many strong and lasting friendships. During her free time, she provided therapy to children in need of special education in their homes. She fully retired in 2017, traveling to multiple states and countries in the last years of her life. Jeanne exhibited a thirst for knowledge and modeled the wonder of knowing. She was an avid reader and eagerly studied history, politics and religion. A lifelong learner, she eamed a degree in Divinity. However, her heart longed to retumed to her home in Haiti which she visited with her children, grandson and various friends. She donated to causes which supported education and the rebuilding and development of Haiti and was passionate about ensuring that students received an education regardless of their financial circumstances.
Jeanne will be forever remembered for her magnetic and charming personality, her warm smile and infectious laugh, and for her riveting and engaging conversations. She was outgoing, confident and loved to speak and learn from others. She was passionate about teaching young children and entertained volunteering in a preschool only a few months before her passing. She loved the outdoors, traveling, walking, and taking road trips.
Jeanne lived a full and beautiful life on her terms until she left her earthly body to be with her Lord and Savior on August 3, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ferdinand Boursiquot and Eunelie François, her siblings Joseph Boursiquot, Antoine Boursiquot, Anne Michel, Mariel Boursiquot, and Justine Gauthier, and her grandson Jaden Williams.
Jeanne is survived by her children: Jean (Fadeline Cadet), Estherll'Ange (Mark Cullum), Pierre = (Terri Burke), Rubain (Radika Udairam), Jill, and Levi; her grandchildren: Kayla, Sion, Daniella, Chinara, Madison, Alexander, Ashley, Elle and Angelina; her siblings: Marie Therese Boursiquot, Antoini "Nini" Michel, Antoinius Boursiquot, Justa Mondestin, Jean Barde Boursiquot, and Roseana Coffy; and her numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews and a host of additional family and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
The Dorancy Family is especially grateful for the generous outpouring of love, support, words of encouragement, thoughts, and prayers. Thank you for thinking of our family in our difficult time of grief. The family would like to extend their thanks to the medical and nursing staff of Brooklyn Memorial Hospital and the Frantz Daniel Jean Funeral Home.
