Berenice Dumersaint went to meet her Lord and Savior on Monday, October 3rd, 2022 at the age of 87.
Berenice Dumersaint, nee Mesidor, lovingly known as “Bebe” was born in Duval, Haiti on April 15th 1935. The daughter of the late Mesina Mesidor, née Rosier and Choisil Mesidor, she was the fourth of seven children. She would later become the first to migrate to the US, an opportunity that paved the way for other family members to come. She married Daniel Avrilien Dumersaint in Petion-Ville Haiti on November 6th, 1968. Her husband Daniel tragically passed away two months after their wedding in a car accident. From that union, Berenice bore one child, Marie Carmel Dumersaint who was the joy of her life and for whom she made every sacrifice. She was a devoted mother who tirelessly supported and cared for her daughter who battled health struggles from an early age. Her daughter Marie describes her as having been her rock, her strength, her best friend, her everything!
Berenice filled many roles throughout her career. Positions included working at the El Rancho Hotel in Haiti, housekeeping and babysitting for a family in the state of Kentucky, working in a factory manufacturing handbags and ultimately cooking at a Haitian restaurant.
Berenice’s faith in God was the foundation of her life. She was a member of the Eglise du Nazareen Libre for many decades and the church became her second family. She was a dedicated member of the groups Dames Dorcas and Amis de Jesus, women’s church groups that focused on singing, prayer and benevolence. A loyal church member, Berenice would diligently clean the sanctuary weekly, and even took the responsibility of opening the church doors prior to service along with fellow members Sr. Edouard and Sr. Grandoigt. As her illness progressed, she was greatly saddened to relinquish those duties.
Gentle in spirit, sweet, quiet and kind to all those she met, “Bebe” was very nurturing and to know her was to love her.
In the latter part of her life, she was afflicted with Multiple Myeloma, a condition that impacted her life tremendously.
